Turkic Converbs and Serialization : Syntax, Semantics, Grammaticalization
Москва, 2015, 264 p.
The monograph analyzes the Turkic converbs with the suffix -p and their place in the grammatical system of Turkic. The Turkic languages have constructions with the lexical verb in the form of p- converb (gerund, co-verb etc.) and the auxiliary. One of the problems the author aims at solving is specifying the grammatical semantics conveyed by auxiliary verbs. Besides, the combinations of different serial (auxiliary) verbs with negation, passive, and causative markers are examined. The process of grammaticalization, i.e. transformation of a lexical verb into an auxiliary, is also scrutinized. This process is synchronously accompanied by re¬structuring, i.e. transformation of a bi-clausal structure into a mono-clausal one. The author identifies a separate group of serial constructions which he describes as “manner – result” verbs. These include directional compounds (to swim and come = to come swimming) and compounds with the resultative semantics (to throttle and kill
