This book, first published in 1973, is devoted to the grammar category of so-called respect forms in modern Japanese language. One of the specificities of this language presumes that social relations among the people demand not only lexical but also grammatical forms of expression, which differ from Russian and other European languages. The author researches various honorific forms of Japanese and defines the existence of the two grammatical categories: the first one reflects the attitude of a speaking person to interlocutor, the second one – the attitude of a speaking person to the people spoken about. The system of forms in each category and their place in the system is revealed. The articles telling about the impact of social relations on Japanese personal pronouns, and changes in modern system of Japanese respect forms appeared under the influence of social factors are also published in this book. This work is recommended to experts in Japanese studies, linguists, teachers, students and postgraduates of philological departments of higher educational institutions as well as to those who study Japanese language on one’s own.
