The book contains articles presented as papers at the International Conference “Religion and Politics in the South of Russia”. This conference was held within the framework of the project of Scientific society of experts in Caucasian studies – “Ethnic and Cultural Diversity of Russia as the Factor of Formation of Civil Identity”. This project is supported by the All-Russian public organization – “Znanie” (“Knowledge”) Society. Collection of articles follows the structure and program of the conference sessions. It includes the texts of reports presented at the plenary session and two sections – “Religion and politics in the South of Russia: the role of state” and “Religion and politics in the South of Russia: problems of science, culture, education and tolerance”. The articles deal with geopolitical issues concerning this region, new challenges and threats. The authors also consider such themes as: the role of Islam, Islamism and radicalism; ethno-confessional issues and problems of diasporas; cultural and historical ties; information policy, etc.
