This book is a result of the second stage of All-Russian School-Conference History of Oriental Studies: Traditions and Modernity. It includes works of authors from the Institute of Oriental Studies, RAS, and their guests from other institutes, which were presented at the conference of the same name in September of 2014. The collection of articles consists of the following parts: History of Oriental Studies in Russia and Abroad; Orientalists and Their Works; The History of Oriental Studies; At the Beginning of Oriental Studies; Actual Trends: Approaches in Russia and in Foreign Countries. The book is divided into thematic parts, generally, according to the subject of study chosen by the authors. The project History of Oriental Studies: Traditions and Modernity is interesting for its exclusivity. It is not similar to one another. This project is a scientific and educational laboratory, and at the same time it is a professional discussion club, in which all the generations of Russian Orientalist participate. The uniqueness of this project lies in the combination of continuity and professional unity, interdisciplinary approach and exclusivity of works on the history of Orientalism. There is no doubt that such a multi-format and consolidating project is very relevant today. The book analyses only a small part of the experience of predecessors. Historical perspective allows seeing and understanding a lot of things. But what is most valuable, it not only provides a deep knowledge of traditions, but also gives the systemic understanding of how a modern Orientalism lives and what is determined its development, what new challenges it faces. The analysis of contemporary approaches to the study of the history of Oriental Studies helps to catch the essence of the new trends in today’s Orientalism. These trends include, for example, the growing number of interdisciplinary issues, their complexity and the need to study them in the unity of political, social, psychological and other aspects; increasing the share of political works in the total number of Oriental Studies, etc. The book is supplied with Summary to each article and information about the authors. The works included in this book will help to retain and comprehend the concepts by Orientalists of different historical periods.
