This collection of articles is prepared as part of a of the same name research project of the Institute of Oriental Studies, RAS. The scientists from Russia (St. Petersburg, Barnaul, Irkutsk, Ulan-Ude) and foreign countries (Ukraine, Mongolia, Iran, Italy) participated in this project. The book consists of Introduction and three Parts. The Introduction gives an insight into cross-border as a consequence of a process or action, localized abroad, and also as the overall quality or condition that manifests itself regardless of frontiers. Some of the challenges to the nation-state, which did not become the subject of research, are characterized in the Introduction. The first Part is devoted to the semantic, etymological and historiographical analysis of the concepts of “border”, “challenge”, “threat”, “nation-state”. The scientists use materials in Russian, English, Italian, and Chinese languages, research a rich arsenal of texts about nation, nationalism, and nation-state. The authors of the second Part analyse the perception of these concepts by political and ordinary consciousness, focusing on different levels and social subjects of such perception. The third Part deals with the variety of challenges. Among the topics touched upon are: crisis of the institution of political parties as cross-border phenomenon, transnational corporations and the nation-state, cross-border religious community and the nation-state (on the example of Iraq during Saddam’s reign), cross-border challenges in geo-economics, the effects of new communication technologies in the Arab countries, challenge from Islam to the idea of nation, etc. Information about the authors is supplied. The book is addressed to all interested in the problems of cross-border and the modern nation-state.
