The book contains translations from Malay into Russian of two works of the famous Malay writer Abdullah bin Abdul Kadir Munshi (1796/7–1854) — memoirs «The Story of Abdullah», published in the last author’s version (1849), as well as his travelogue «The Story of Abdullah’s voyage from Singapore to Mecca (1854), — posthumous oeuvre of the writer, who died in Mecca on his way to Hajj. Both of these writings provide valuable evidence of many historical events in the northwest of the Malay Archipelago during this period, including the rivalry between Great Britain and the Netherlands in this region, as well as the founding of Singapore as an outpost of British rule in the archipelago.
