The development of New Zealand during the last hundred years, its major periods and events are described in this book. A brief historical excursus into the 19th century is made, when the foundation of the state was laid down, which won for the country the fame of “the most advanced democracy in the world”. Political parties struggle, the reforms conducted by them are analysed in the main part of the book. The author pays a particular attention to the successful transformation of the New Zealand’ economy that started in the middle of 80s and basically changed the traditional character of its society: the state paternalism was substituted for a market economy. The place of New Zealand in the world economy was determined on the basis of comparison with other countries’ extensive statistical materials. The Supplement contains brief biographies of governors and prime-ministers.
