This textbook is devoted to the description and analysis of key socio-political and economic processes in the Eastern countries from the second half of the 19th cent. to the beginning of the 21st cent. The author considers the phenomenon of modernization in the East on the example of historical reconstruction of the national communities and states in Japan, China, Korea, South-East Asian countries, India, Turkey, and Iran. Special attention is paid to the current stage of transformation in the East and, in particular, to the globalization and its positive and negative consequences for the countries of the East. Today, the future of the Eastern countries looks uncertain as ever. They have gained a great experience in the policy of changes. These countries have succeeded in acculturating and integrating very much from the experience and culture of the West into the national culture. But at the same time, they retained the tried and tested over the centuries a world view, a traditional way of life and culture, their principles and priorities. This socio-cultural synthesis formed the main body of concepts, attitudes and views, which give to these countries a powerful impetus to the development. It is possible that they themselves after some time will extend their understanding of the modern global world, and these ideas will be taken by the countries of the West. This textbook is meant for the undergraduate and postgraduate students specialized in the field of international relations and foreign regions.
