The basis of this book is the papers of the participants of the International conference in memory of Alexander Gouber “Power and Society in South-East Asia: History and Modernity”, held in March 2015 at the Institute of Asian and African Studies (Moscow). Issue 4 is devoted to the 60th anniversary of the Institute of Asian and African studies. The conference brought together leading experts on South-East Asian countries, working in various educational institutions and research centres of the Russian Federation, as well al their foreign colleagues from Thailand, Laos, Malaysia, and Vietnam. The book is dedicated to a wide range of problems of mutual relations between the authorities and society in South-East region, as a whole, and by example of some countries This collection of articles deals with the peculiarities of traditional and modern concepts of power in South-East Asian countries, methods of restruction of ruling elites, mechanisms of political mobilization of the people, the specifity of the functioning of the party system, tendencies of electoral processes. Special attention is paid to the influence of traditional political culture on the modern public and political processes. The authors propose now approaches to the appraisal of results of socio-political modernization in the countries of South-East Asia. The book is meant for undergraduates and postgraduates specializing in the fields of “Oriental studies”, “Foreign studies”, “Politology”, “World policy”, “Global processes”, as well as for a wide range of readers interested in modern political processes in the countries of the East.
