The All-Russian conference was held in Moscow in April 2015 at the Institute of Oriental Studies, RAS, Center for Studies of the Central Asia, Caucasus and Ural-Volga region. It was devoted to the memory of Vasily A. Perovsky, who was an Orenburg military governor in 1833 – 1842 and governor general of Orenburg and Samara in 1851 – 1857. The scholars from the Institute of Oriental Studies, RAS, and the guests from Orenburg, Ufa and St. Petersburg participated in this conference. The articles included in this book are based on the papers presented at this conference. The authors describe the life and activity of V.A. Perovsky who was at the head of early attempts at the conquest of Central Asia (the Khibiny campaign in 1839 – 1840) and the Kokand campaign (1853). The second part of the book deals with the various aspects of integration of the Bashkirs and other Turkic speaking peoples in the Russian Empire, the Soviet Union, and the modern Russia.
