This collection of articles opens the series, which will be published in the fu-ture by the Center of the Institute of Oriental Studies, RAS, for Studies of Central Asia, the Caucasus and Urals-Volga Region. Perhaps this is inten-tional and symbolic that the first issue is devoted to Abkhazia. The Institute of Oriental Studies traditionally paid a lot of attention in its researches to the past and present of this country. At the present time the scientists of the In-stitute carry out archaeological researches in Abkhazia, hold joint confer-ences, and publish scientific works. The following collections of this series will be devoted to South Ossetia and Nagorny Karabakh. The authors of this book are the Russian and Abkhazian scientists. By now a great amount of materials has been gathered on archaeology, history, ethnography, folklore, study of art. A significant part of the book is devoted to historiographical researches. The article by A.Yu. Skakov deals with antique Abkhazia. This theme has a huge gistoriography, but still has been little-studied. E.D. Eshba and A.F. Avidzba devote their articles to the modern times of Abkhazia. E.D. Eshba scrutinized the religious situation in Abkhazia in our days. A.F. Avidzba analysed the history of Abkhazian-Russian relations in the period of independent Abkhazian state formation.
