The author of this book for the first time in Russian literature made an attempt to comprehend and systematize different materials concerning the evolution of Jewish communities during more than one and a half thousand-year history of the Ottoman state. Great attention is paid to the problems of Jewish communities’ dependence on inner development of the Ottoman Empire institutions as well as on changing status of this state in the international scene. The author also considers mutual relations between Jewish communities and the peoples living around them: the Turks, Slavs, Greeks, Arabs, and Armenians.
In her work the researcher used Sultanic fermans, materials from Russian and Turkish archives, collections of Jewish documents (rabbinic courts and others), and vast literature in Russian, Turkish, Slavonic and European languages.
