The collection of articles “Modernization in the islamic east. The experience of Turkey, Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan” can give an idea of the complex character of the process and the multitude of problems with which it is associated. The articles are in the main the revised versions of the papers presented at the Conference “Modernization in the East”. The experience of the countries of West Asia’held at the Institute of Oriental Studies in the fall of 1995. Turkey and Iran, being the key countries of the region, have attracted the scholarly interest of the bulk of the authors. Modernization in these countries is treated both in the time limits of the contemporary period and in a broader historical perspective covering the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The peculiar features of modernization in Pakistan and Afghanistan, though undeniable and in certain respects quite obvious, do not preclude a general treatment of the efforts of the regional Muslim nations to come to grips with the demands of the modern time and employ multifaceted adaptation mechanisms.
