This book examines the processes, phenomena and events in Eastern Europe in 8 – 14 cent. in the context of social-natural history – the history of the relationship between human beings and nature. For the first time it is shown that the Protestant ethic (mental framework of European capitalism) was formed in the epoch of Great plowing, three centuries before the development of capitalism. The book is based on lectures delivered by the author in 1999 at the Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznan, Poland. The Preface is written by V. Naumkin, V. Belokrenitsky, M. Volos, and A. Urbanek.
