This book represents a diary kept by the author during the course of academic training at Fudan University (Shanghai) in 1985 – 1986. The author, who appeared to be a witness of the initial period of the China reforms declared in December 1978, provides a story summing up his experience and impression of China gained during his journeys around the country. The author pays special attention to the description of various historical places and natural sights in China, which arisen his interest and in many times true admiration. Presenting this account of events took place in China in the 80s the author believes that his book can attract certain attention of the present day readers since many social and psychological aspects of the past seem very closely connected with the current China situation. In the Annex to the book the author presents his diary kept during his academic training in Ritsumeikan University (Kyoto, Japan) in November – December 1991. The book also includes the article by Yu.M. Galenovich “China under Mao’s rule and after it. Historical background for the memories”.
