A collection of essays based upon the papers read at the conference ‘Money in South Asia: Economy, (Geo)politics, Society, Culture’ held on 22–23 May, 2024 by the Centre for Indian Studies, Institute of Oriental Studies, Russian Academy of Sciences. Specialists from various research institutes and universities of Russia, like Institute of Oriental Studies, Moscow State University, IMEMO, MGIMO, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Patrice Lumumba Peoples’ Friendship University, RANEPA (Nizhny Novgorod), LGPU (Lipetsk) along with the colleagues from India and Armenia, discuss various aspects of economic, social, political, cultural and ideological functions of money in different epochs of Indian history, availing themselves of a countless variety of sources, from medieval chronicles to modern forms of statistical analysis and economic prognosis, from classical poetry and religious — philosophical texts to popular TV and Internet shows.
