Tunisian Elegy. Dialogue Between East and West in Works of French-speaking Writers of the 20th – 21st Cent.

Institute of Oriental Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences

Москва, 2016, 558 p.

The book contains the author’s publications of different years about work of Tunisian writers of the 20th – 21st cent. They live in emigration, but are closely connected with their native country. Tunisia becomes in their works a source of inspiration, the object of comparison with the West, and hopes for returning. An endless internal dialogue between East and West in prose and poetry of the Tunisians reflects both the unceasing pain of loss of the Motherland, and the impossibility to get completely accustomed to a foreign land despite the attempts of finding “integrity” and the search for ideals. Peculiarities of prose and poetry of the French-speaking Tunisians are a rejection and at the same time nostalgia for “the old days” East, admiration and at the same time rejection of the West. In their works, the authors try to find a new harmony of “unity of the world”. The Supplement includes fragments of their books translated by S.V. Prozhogina. This book is addressed to those who are interested in the manifold world of culture and literature of North Africa.
