Buddhist tradition in Kalmykia and Western Mongolia: sacred objects

,

Москва, 2015, 238 p.

The book is devoted to the study of the Buddhist tradition of the Oirats — closely related in origin to the peoples who live on vast territories from Mongolia to the Russian Volga region, where in the XVII — XVIII centuries formed new ethnicity — Kalmyks. In the first place, the authors’ attention is attracted to the monasteries, temples, suburgans (stupas), i.e. sacred with magical power objects. The study of materials of the National archive of the Republic of Kalmykia and other sources made it possible to clarify the location of these objects in Kalmykia and other areas inhabited by the Kalmyks in the past. It also has drawn attention to the problem of preservation of historical monuments and culture in these regions. An important role plays the comparative analysis of the main body of Buddhist texts and written monuments preserved in the monasteries and in private collections as well as oral traditions (legends, tales, prayers that had been spread among ordinary people), etc.
