The modern Russian oriental studies accumulated a huge
сollection of papers based on archival documents pertaining
to historical events, notes and reports by scholars, diplomatic
and military staff — faithful servants of the Fatherland. Most
of the archival documents are the private diaries and letters,
maps, photographs and pictures extremely valuable for scholars
as documentary sources. Without this enormous heritage it is
impossible to carry out any oriental studies in various fields of
research — philology, history, economics, politics, and culture of
the Orient.
Collecting the archival materials dedicated to a certain subject
is quite a complicated process. The selected papers are different
in nature, coverage, reliability, integrity and readability. Taking
into account the peculiarity of the oriental languages, one should
be very attentive to the scripts, calligraphic and cryptographic
particulars of a document. Archival files, dossiers and records
potentially fruitful for a scholar are often hard to be predicted,
this is why an archival research may be put as an archeological
expedition, and the finding of a forgotten document may become
a discovery of a historical landmark.
The presented collection is aimed at outlining the contemporary
scope of research interests of Russian oriental studies scholars,
their professional competence and expertise in a wide range
of subjects. The volume will hopefully be interesting both for
specialists and ordinary readers.
The volume presents the proceedings of the V International
academic conference aimed at commemorating the 200 years
anniversary of the Oriental Studies Institute under the Russia
Academy of Sciences. The conference was attended also by
a number of Russian and foreign scholars from the leading
academic institutions who presented their reports and papers.
The comprehensive list of the above participants and their
contributions has been shown in the present volume
