This is a catalogue of a large-scale exhibition which took place in museum-conservancy area Tsaritsyno (Moscow) in June – October 2012 which included painting, applied art, artistic installations, cinema and photographic materials, ethnographic and manuscript collections from 17 state museums of Moscow, St. Petersburg, Makhachkala, as well as from private collections. Discursive analysis of Caucasian ethnic cultures key notions allows defining cultural-historical area of this unique region, to show collision and interaction of local traditions, their development in the period of almost 200 years of Russian and Soviet reforms. Divided in 5 big thematic blocks (Caucasian images, male and female space in Caucasian traditions, war and peace at Caucasian border zone, knowledge and power) 98 notions are characterized in the catalogue in verbal form (historical-ethnographical and art study narrations) and visually – through the view of exhibit items. Scientists from the Institute of Oriental Studies, RAS, (Center for the Study of Central Asia, the Caucasus and the Urals-Volga Region) – V.O. Bobrovnikov and P.I. Takhnaeva – took part in prepublishing of the Catalogue, the selection of photographic materials, writing vocabulary entries and introductory articles for the sections of the book, and editing.
