The book by well-known experts in the field of the history of the North Cau-casus in Soviet period analyses the most acute problems of the hill-people’s participation in the Great Patriotic War of 1941 – 1945. The themes under consideration are: the particularities of the organizational and mobilization work in the national regions of the North Caucasus and military service of the hill-people; the history of national military units; occupation regime; the causes and extent of the phenomena of collaboration and anti-Soviet insur-gency; deportation of a number of peoples from their historical homeland.
The work presents a detailed analysis of the historiography and source stud-ies of the listed issues. All of these problems are the subjects of intense de-bates and often are interpreted extremely tendentiously in the historical litera-ture and journalism.
The authors tried impartially, basing on a broad docu-mentary material, to contribute to the objective study of the participation of the hill-people in the Great Patriotic War.
