Judaism in Russian Empire (The manuscript is on a deposit in ISSI, RAS. 18.03.13, № 61082)

Москва, 2013, 10 p.

The present work is the first experience to research a many-sided theme – Judaism in Russian Empire. The author considers the attitude of Judaism to the processes of modernization which took place in the late period of Russian Empire. Significant attention is paid to various trends of Judaism, mostly to Hasidism of different orientations, reformatory movement and neo-orthodoxy. The book states that one serious challenge for traditional Judaism became secular mentality which gave birth to the ideas of Zionism, socialism and assimilation. All these put in doubt or even deny one of the general postulates of Judaism – theory about Messiah. The author comes to the conclusion that in spite of proliferation of ideas of disbelief and secular world outlook, Judaism managed to show its flexibility and adequate reaction to epoch challenges. Jewish religion on the whole retained its positions among majority of multimillion Jewish population in Russia.
