The book is a second, enlarged and commented edition of an explanatory dictionary of linguistic and philological terms compiled by a distinguished Russian linguistician E.D. Polivanov (1891 – 1938) in 1935 – 1937. It was first published in 1991 in the edition: E.D. Polivanov. Papers in Oriental and General Linguistics, and appeared as a separate book in 1910. The dictionary is still of great historical and linguistic significance. It contains definitions of many terms used in the studies of language and literature, provided with illustrations from various languages. In this enlarged version, supplemented with comments by L.R. Kontsevich, the dictionary is published for the first time. The dictionary is of interest to a wide range of linguisticians and philologists, as well as to everybody who deals with philology. The great value of this dictionary is confirmed by the fact that the Dictionary’s second edition has become necessary as soon as five years after its first publication as a separate book.
