This book examines the role of the USSR in the formation of the national liberation movement in Iranian Kurdistan during the 1930–1940s.
By mining unique historical documents from Russian state archives and other sources, Dr. Magomedkhanov reveals the tension between idealism and pragmatism that characterized Soviet policy toward the Iranian Kurds and brings to light little-known facts about Soviet involvement in Iranian internal affairs while the Red Army was stationed in northern Iran. He analyzes the network of factors contributing to the Kurdish proclamation of autonomy and the extent and significance of Soviet influence and support, especially in building an armed force.
The book will be of interest to a wide range of readers, from specialists in Eastern Studies to general historians to any reader not indifferent to the fate of the peoples of the East.
