The book is devoted to the very vital and theoretically difficult problem of nation and nationalism in the Muslim World. The authors try to find answers to issues raised by the current international situation, identify the causes and special features of the crisis of nations-states, the evolution of state system to the South of Russian border. Themes of spreading in the Middle East radical trends and militarized movements, raging terrorism, the rise of ethnic nationalism and separatism are analysed in this book. The participants of this collection of articles offer new perspectives in the approach to the phenomenon of nationalism in the Muslim East, to the analysis of socio-economic development of the region, and the study of the historical aspects of nationalism, Great power statehood and ethnicity in the Muslim World. Emphasis is made on political and ideological specifics and peculiarities of social and cultural development of Turkey, Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan, as well as Syria, Iraq, Lebanon, and Libya. Special attention is paid to the problem of the Kurds and Kurdish nationalism.
