Moskva, 2012, 376 pages

This book consists of a number of biographical essays devoted to Russian scientists-humanists of the 20th cent., first of all to linguists and orientalists. The author, who had for a long time studied the history of science, aspired to combine in his essays the history of ideas and the history of people, the story about scientific concepts, biographical analysis and some memoirs. He de-scribes the development of some scientific disciplines during the last century, speaks about the personalities of the scientists who suggested some of other ideas or concepts, and analyzes the influence exerted on the fate and activities of these scientists by the difficult and interesting time of their life. The book reveals some little-known facts from the history of the science of the 20th century and introduces some new information and archival data into the academic circulation. The author takes care to avoid both old and new stereotypes in his estimates of the numerous historical events referred to.
